The Montessori Method
CMS of Georgetown educates children by following the Montessori Method. This method was created by Maria Montessori, first female physician of Italy, in the early 1900s. Montessori observed that young children learn most efficiently through concrete experiences with the world around them. She noticed that they passed through “sensitive periods” during which they learned almost effortlessly. The Montessori Method capitalizes on these sensitive periods by presenting children with individualized learning experiences that both intrigue and challenge them.
In a Montessori classroom, children of mixed ages learn together. In our school, children from two and a half to six years work together. This allows the younger ones to learn from older peer role models while giving older students the opportunity to build self-confidence and self-esteem as they become leaders in the classroom.
The curriculum and materials are adapted to suit everyone from the very youngest members of our community to the very oldest. At CMS, we intend to respect and follow the rhythms of each child as they discover the world.
Montessori education is based on a three year developmental cycle. With each succesive year the investment is enhanced and offers a maximum return during the third and final year.
